Frigate Bay and Marriott Hotel       The Peninsula

St. Kitts is one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean. It is surrounded by pristine beauty, unspoilt beaches and tropical landscape. 23 miles long and 5 miles across at its widest, encompassing an area of 68 square miles. Nevis, equally as spectacular, is the smaller island, lies to the south and is approximately 7 miles in diameter, covering a total of 36 square miles. The two islands support a population of about 45,000, of which about 9,000 live on the island of Nevis. The yearly average temperature in St. Kitts is 80 degrees with a constant cooling northeast trade wind. English is the official language and US or Eastern Caribbean dollars is the currency.

The island of St.Kitts has varied architectural structures, some of which date back to the 17th century, with architectural influences from the French & English settlers who occupied the territory at that period. There are more than 200 historical sites to be found around the island including homes, government buildings, plantation houses and the World Heritage listed Brimstone Hill National Park.

What to do in St. Kitts and Nevis
Golf
Royal St.Kitts Golf Course

Visitors to St. Kitts have the privilege of playing at the St. Kitts Royal Golf Club, the Tom McBroom-designed 18-hole championship golf course. Few fairways in the world can match the signature features of this challenging course. It offers the most picturesque oceanfront fairways in the Caribbean, has four tee choices, and 6,911 yards of palm fringed tropical golf course.

Four Seasons Golf Course, Nevis

On the neighbouring island of Nevis, only a 40-minute boat ride away, you will find the best golf resort in the Caribbean. Why not combine the trip by staying overnight at the renowned Four Seasons Hotel and do some 'star spotting'.

St. Kitts Scenic Railway National Tour

St. Kitts Railway offers visitors one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Built between 1912 and 1926 to deliver sugar cane from the fields to the sugar mill in the capital city of Basseterre, the railway now provides a fascinating way to see the entire nation from the comfort of luxurious railcars built specifically for touring the island of St. Kitts. It takes its visitors around the island following the original tracks of the Sugar Train, via old plantation homes and some spectacular scenery.

Diving

St.Kitts offers exceptional dive sites for the novice and experienced diver. These include wrecks, reefs, walls and caves. St Kitts has healthy reefs and marine life that includes rays, barracuda, garden eels, nurse sharks, sea turtles, sea fans, giant barrel sponges and black coral. St.Kitts offers magnificent dive spots in its crystal-clear waters with more than 50 dive sites in the area. More than 400 undiscovered wrecks surround the island, as well as pristine coral reefs and a myriad of colourful marine life. St.Kitts law forbids unsupervised diving but the local dive operators are certified, knowledgeable and will assist you in safe and pleasant diving.

Tours, Walks and Safaris
Tropical Rain Forest

There are many different guided walks through the rain forest and to the top of the volcano. Jeep safaris will take you to the Plantation Inns with their rich history. Independent island tours by taxi or in your hire car will take you along the most beautiful countryside and through local villages where life is very different to the more 'sophisticated' capital Basseterre. If you are the energetic type you could ride the quad bikes through the forests and visit the monkey sanctuary at The Lodge.

A visit to the many Plantation Inns both on St.Kitts and Nevis is a must. There is nothing quite like sitting on the balcony of what used to be the great house of a former sugar plantation and casting your mind back to how things must have been a few hundred years ago. The cocktails are fantastic and you may spot a humming bird in the very large lush plantation grounds. These Plantation Inns have in the last few years been tastefully restored into luxury hotels that are open to the public for cocktails, lunch and dinners.

Caribelle Batik at Romney Manor.

Don't forget a stop at Romney Manor, part of Wingfield estate, once owned by the Jefferson family. One grandson, Thomas, became the third US president. This enchanting hideaway with its fantastic tropical gardens is now the home of Caribelle Batik where handcrafted clothing and material are produced. This is a very popular wedding location.

What about a day at sea? Catamaran Cruises will take you on an unforgettable snorkelling, or just sailing, trip from St.Kitts to Nevis where a sumptuous barbeque is prepared on the famous palm fringed Pinney's Beach. You can walk to The Four Season Hotel or just relax in the sun after a few rum punches before returning to St.Kitts. Believe you me; you will not want to get off.

Culture

A great aspect of St. Kitts culture is its folklore such as; Clowns, Moko-Jumbies, Masquerade, Bull, and Actors. All come on display in the tremendous exuberance at Christmas time during the carnival to entertain and educate the community about the culture.

Brimstone Hill Fort National Park

High on a hillside overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the forboding mass of Brimstone Hill is an impressive sight. Though the heavy cannons pointing out to sea are now silent, they starred in many ferocious battles between the French and the English in the late-17th and 18th centuries.

Building work began in 1690, when, under British rule, African slaves toiled for 100 years to complete the huge fort with its five bastions and citadel. Covering 38 acres, the fort is one of the largest engineering projects undertaken in the Caribbean and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Beaches

St. Kitts has got many unspoilt and secluded white sandy beaches with calm clear waters on the Caribbean side and more tempestuous on the Atlantic side. This unique combination makes these beaches ideal for all kinds of water sports such as water skiing, sailing, canoeing etc.

Turtle Beach St. Kitts Pinney's Beach Nevis

Surfing and windsurfing is most favoured on the rougher Atlantic side. On the north part of the island you will find the black volcanic beaches. As all the beaches are so quiet they only offer the most basic of facilities. However, on most, sun beds and umbrellas are available at a small charge and local food and rum punches are a must. The beaches are surrounded by coral reefs making swimming and snorkelling a real pleasure.
